The most comforting hot drinks to make at home this Autumn

As much as we’re sad to say goodbye to the Summer, we adore Autumn.
Every year, we look forward to this most magical of seasons. It’s wonderful to watch the leaves changing colour, to don cosy knitwear and snuggle up by the fire. ‘Cause that’s what the season is all about - comfort, cosiness and its own unique aesthetic.

Obviously, for us, when we think of Autumn, the first thing that springs to mind is wrapping our hands around a delicious hot drink.

Summer was the time to try refreshing iced drinks. Now, we can’t wait to try out all of our new ideas for aromatic, cosy hot drinks recipes.

So, we’ve used this blog to collect our favourite new home hot drinks ideas - creating the ultimate bank of ideas for comforting, warm recipes for Autumn-inspired drinks.

1. Golden Milk Lattes

Ingredients (Serves 2)
  • Espresso, 2 shots
  • Whole milk, 600ml (can be substituted for an alt milk of your choice)
  • Sugar, 1 tbsp
  • Cinnamon, 1 tsp
  • Turmeric, 1 tsp
  • Cardamom, ¼ tsp
  • Allspice, ¼ tsp
  • Nutmeg, ¼ tsp
  • Black pepper, a small punch

Method
  • Use your Smarter Coffee to brew the espresso, to your desired strength.
  • In a saucepan, gently heat your milk until it starts to simmer. Keep stirring.
  • Once it starts to bubble at the edges, add the spices. Keep stirring until all the ingredients have dissolved.
  • Take off the heat, stir in the espresso, then pour into two mugs.


2. Oaxacan Hot Chocolate

Ingredients (Serves 2)
  • Whole milk, 500ml (can be substituted for an alt milk of your choice)
  • Cocoa powder, 60g
  • Cinnamon stick, 1
  • Icing sugar, 2 tbsp
  • Salt, a pinch
  • Dark chocolate, 125g, chopped

Method
  • Heat the milk in a medium saucepan. Once warm, add in the cocoa powder, cinnamon stick, sugar and salt. Keep stirring the mixture until the mixture begins to bubble at the edges and it starts to boil.
  • Remove the pan from heat and whisk in the chocolate. Keep stirring until the chocolate has melted.
  • Take out the cinnamon stick, then pour into two large mugs.

3. Authentic Chai Latte

Ingredients (Serves 2)
  • Whole milk, 240 ml (can be substituted for an alt milk of your choice)
  • Whole cloves, 5
  • Green cardamom pods, 5
  • Brown cardamom pods, 3
  • Cinnamon sticks, 2
  • Ground ginger, 1 tsp
  • Sugar, 1 tbsp
  • Black tea leaves, 1 tbsp

Method
  • In a saucepan, pour in the milk. Gently heat the milk until it starts to simmer.
  • Add all the spices into the pan. Leave the spices to infuse on a low heat for around 10 minutes.
  • Strain the mixture to remove the whole spices.
  • Using an electric milk frother, froth the hot milk until it is nice and thick. Then, pour into two large mugs and serve.


4. Autumn Sangria

Ingredients (serves 4)
  • Pears, 1, diced
  • Apples, 1, diced
  • Cranberries, a handful
  • Bay leaf, 1
  • Sage leaves, 2
  • Thyme, a sprig
  • Brandy, 50 ml
  • Red wine, 100 ml
  • Cranberry juice, 100 ml
  • Apple cider, 10ml
  • Orange, ½ sliced
  • Cinnamon stick, 1
  • Allspice, 1 tsp

Method
  • Add the pears, apples, cranberries, and herbs to a baking tray. Cook in the oven on a low heat until the fruit is soft and tender.
  • In a large saucepan, gently heat the brandy, wine, cranberry juice, cider, orange, cinnamon and allspice.
  • Once the mixture is simmering and steaming, pour into a large glass jug and serve.
